Revenue by Category

Revenue by Category

The Revenue report (Reports → Revenue) breaks your income down by month, by client, by project type — and by category, so you can see which kinds of work actually pay.

Categories come from the tags on each project, including any custom ones you've created. Tag your projects (Branding, Web build, Retainer care, whatever fits) and the breakdown fills itself in.

What counts as revenue here

Money actually received in the period — real payments, plus any external cash-in you've recorded for invoices settled outside Handl. Not invoices raised, not work delivered. If it hasn't been paid, it isn't in this chart.

Why the categories can add up to more than your total revenue

This is the one thing worth knowing before you reconcile anything.

A project can carry more than one category, and when it does, its full revenue is counted under each tag it holds. A $10,000 project tagged both "Branding" and "Web build" contributes $10,000 to both columns.

So the columns can sum to more than the Total Revenue card above them. That's a property of multi-tagging, not a reconciliation error — the chart says so underneath it too. If you want columns that sum to your total, give each project exactly one category.

Currencies are never blended

A category's revenue can span more than one currency, and Handl keeps them apart rather than converting behind your back. You'll see each currency on its own — never a single mixed figure that isn't true in either.

Good to know

  • Untagged projects don't disappear — they're grouped so you can see how much revenue isn't categorised yet.
  • Changing a project's categories re-buckets its revenue immediately; the chart reads current tags rather than what the tags were at payment time.
  • The other Revenue views (by month, by client, by type) each answer a different question and use the same underlying payments.

FAQs

Where do I set a project's categories?
In Project Settings. You can pick from the standard set or add your own.

Why is a big paid invoice missing from the chart?
Check the payment date falls inside the period you're looking at — this chart is driven by when money arrived, not when the invoice was raised.

Does this include money collected outside Handl?
Yes, if you've recorded it against the invoice as external cash-in. It's bucketed by category exactly like a Handl payment.
