Create and order milestones

Create and order milestones

Milestones can be added by hand, suggested by Handl's AI, or generated from an approved quote — and once they exist, you can reorder and adjust their timing from the project roadmap.

  1. Open a project and go to its Milestones tab.
  2. Select Add Milestone, then enter a name, description, currency, amount, and due date.
  3. Alternatively, select Suggest Milestones to let Handl propose a set of milestones based on the project, then review and apply the ones you want.
  4. If the project started from a client-approved quote, use Convert to Milestones instead of creating them from scratch (see "Convert an approved quote into milestones").
  5. To reorder milestones or adjust their dates, switch to the project's roadmap view. Drag a milestone block up or down to reorder it, drag the body to move its dates, or drag an edge to resize it. Clicking an empty spot on the timeline creates a new milestone there.

Good to know

  • Reordering happens in the roadmap view, not the milestone list — the list follows the order you set on the roadmap.
  • Once a milestone has been invoiced or paid, you can't edit or delete it. If you need to remove a milestone that isn't invoiced yet, use the Archive option instead of trying to delete a milestone that's already in progress.
  • AI-suggested milestones are a starting point — review names, amounts, and dates before applying them, and adjust anything that doesn't match your scope.

FAQs

Can I delete a milestone once work has started on it?
Only if it hasn't been invoiced or paid — otherwise you'll need to archive it rather than delete it.

Is there a limit to how many milestones a project can have?
No set limit — break the project down as finely as makes sense for how you bill.

Can I move a milestone's dates without changing its amount?
Yes — dragging a milestone on the roadmap only changes its estimated dates, not its amount.
