Partial payments, saved cards and auto-pay
Partial payments, saved cards and auto-pay
Not every client pays an invoice in one go — Handl supports partial payments, lets clients save a card for next time, and can automatically charge a saved card so invoices get paid without anyone chasing them.
- Partial payments — a client can pay less than the full amount owing on an invoice; the invoice moves to "partially paid" and shows the remaining balance until it's settled.
- For structured instalments, set up a payment plan on an invoice — split it into a fixed number of payments on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly schedule, with the option to charge them automatically.
- Saved cards — when a client pays (or saves a card as part of approving an auto-pay quote), their card is securely stored against their record with your agency for next time, so they don't need to re-enter it.
- Auto-pay — a client can turn this on from their portal, choosing a saved payment method, a maximum amount they're comfortable being charged, and whether to be charged on the due date or a set number of days before it.
Good to know
- Auto-pay is opted into by the client, not switched on by your agency on their behalf — though you can request it as part of quote approval.
- Auto-pay respects the client's maximum amount setting — if an invoice exceeds it, the automatic charge won't go through and the client will need to pay manually.
- Clients can choose to be notified before and after an automatic charge happens.
FAQs
Can a client remove a saved card?
Yes, from their portal at any time.
What happens if an auto-pay charge fails?
The invoice stays unpaid and follows your normal reminder process — see "Payment reminders and tax set-aside."
Can I set up a payment plan on any invoice?
Yes — payment plans can be created on an invoice to split it into instalments, with or without automatic charging.
