Connect Wise or Airwallex to pay contractors
Connect Wise or Airwallex to pay contractors
To pay contractors from Handl, connect the Wise or Airwallex account you pay from. Handl creates and funds transfers only when you approve a pay run. You can connect either or both, and choose the provider for each contractor on their pay terms.
You need to be an owner or admin. Go to Settings → Money → Pay your team (or Money → Pay runs → Settings) and look under Payout providers.
Connect Wise
Wise uses the same connection as invoice matching. If you have already connected Wise under Settings → Money → Payment options, it shows here as Connected, but it needs the right kind of token.
- In Wise, go to Settings → API tokens on your business profile and choose Add new token.
- Choose Full access if you will pay your team from Wise. Read only is enough if you only want Handl to match incoming client payments to invoices.
- Leave Allowed IPs blank. Handl's servers do not use a fixed IP, so an IP restriction would break the connection.
- Copy the token into Handl (Settings → Money → Payment options → Wise, then Connect Wise). It is stored encrypted and never shown again.
A read-only token cannot create recipients or send transfers. Contractors cannot save payout details and pay runs cannot be approved. If your connected token was created as Read only, create a Full access token and reconnect.
Regional limit: outside the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia, a Wise personal token cannot fund transfers (pay runs) or read statements. If your Wise account is based elsewhere, contact support@handl.works before relying on pay runs.
Webhook: there is nothing to add by hand for payouts. Handl registers a webhook with Wise so payout status updates arrive.
What Handl does with a Wise token: reads balances and statements, creates a recipient for each contractor, gets a quote, and creates and funds transfers only when you approve a pay run. For invoice matching it reads incoming transfers and balances.
Connect Airwallex
- In Airwallex, open Developer in the left sidebar (near the bottom), then API keys, and choose New scoped API key. If you don't see Developer, your Airwallex user needs the Owner, Admin or Developer role.
- Pick a scoped key (not an admin key) and grant exactly these permissions:
Scope Permission Account Read Balances Read Beneficiaries Read + Write Transfers Read + Write FX rates Read - In Handl, choose Connect next to Airwallex. Paste the Client ID and the API key. Airwallex shows the key once. The key is stored encrypted and never shown again.
- Optional but recommended: paste the Webhook secret at the same time (see the next section).
What Handl does with an Airwallex key: reads your balances to show them on the page, links an existing beneficiary you choose or creates one when the contractor submits their payout details, and creates transfers only when you approve a pay run. Handl cannot change your Airwallex users or settings.
Add the Airwallex webhook
After connecting, Handl shows a webhook URL under Airwallex. This is how payout updates reach Handl.
- In Airwallex open Developer → Webhooks and choose New webhook. Paste the URL Handl shows (use the copy button).
- Subscribe it to the transfer status events (the
payout.transfer.*family). Handl ignores every other event. - Paste the secret Airwallex shows into Handl's Webhook secret field so Handl can verify the events. The secret is only saved when you connect, so if you did not have it yet, Disconnect and connect again with it.
What Handl never does
- It never moves money without a person approving the pay run.
- It never holds your funds. Payouts leave your own balance.
- It never shows a stored key or token again.
FAQs
Can I use both providers? Yes. Each contractor is paid from the provider chosen on their pay terms. Paying from a balance in the matching currency avoids conversion.
Can Handl pay a contractor's own Wise account? Yes, when the provider is Wise. The contractor can choose "My Wise account" in their payout details. Airwallex pays to bank accounts.
